It has come to my attention that some yet not all, clients using the DevaCurl products are having issues with their hair and scalp. I understand the DevaCurl products were tested by the company and they have been found that they are safe for use.  An independent study outside of the company is now being performed and I will inform you of results as soon as they come available to me. Since the time that this matter has come to my attention I have done additional research on curly hair care and products.  I'm pleased to announce I have learned new interesting techniques, new curly hair products, and have tried these techniques and new products on my own hair.  I have been in contact with various curly hair specialist and professionals to determine a course of action to treat hair loss or scalp issues for anyone who needs assistance in these issues. For now, I have decided to continue to use DevaCurl products on the clients who wish to use them but will offer, suggest, and educate my clients on the alternative products  we have for use and sale for curly hair.
We have always carried AG Hair products at Essentials. Recently we have started carrying their curly hair line. It is from an established company of 30+ years and is botanically based, safe for curly hair and recommended by many curly hair specialist. There are a variety of products to suit all types if curly , wavy, and super curly hair. Schedule a free consultation with JULIE P. To learn more and she will suggest product specifically for your hair type and goals. Purchase at 20% OFF AG Hair products during our introductory time. - Julie P.   NEPA Curly Hair Specialist @ Essentials salon & Spa , Clarks Summit PA

PICK MASSAGE OVER PILLS.
"Each day more than 100 people die from opioid overdose and the victims are not who you may suspect them to be," explains Dr. Shilpi. "They often start out using medications prescribed by a doctor for an injury or chronic issue, but the debilitating and frustrating effects of pain often lead to the misuse of these medications." Dr. Shilpi's advice is for physicians and patients to look to non-pharmacologic alternatives, including the following:
1. Massage: Massage is a technique and medical treatment for pain and muscle injury that has been used long before medications were developed. Massage increases blood flow to inflamed tissue, helps stimulate recovery and provides localized pain relief without side effects.
2. Turmeric: A potent anti-inflammatory, you can now find Turmeric in many places, even some unexpected ones. Turmeric is a root that looks similar to ginger, but it is orange inside. It has several healing properties and can be taken in both capsule and raw form. The anti-inflammatory nature of Turmeric aids in joint pain, muscle aches, and wound healing. The yellow colored powder can be found in Indian, Thai and other South Asian cuisine. If you're not a fan of the taste, add it to a fruit and protein smoothie and you'll barely taste it or consider a capsule.

At Essential salon and Spa, we care about our clients. Call to schedule a massage and relief from pain .

NAIL NEWS
Why we turn away clients with nail fungus…

We do not perform pedicures on clients with Toenail Fungus…you shouldn’t go anywhere that does. On a rare occasion, we have been running into clients who are confused and/or upset when they come in for their pedicure and are turned away because they have an active toenail fungus.  We know, it is embarrassing to be turned away for any service…but there are some VERY IMPORTANT reasons that we will not service anyone with toenail fungus.
1.  It is against state regulations to provide a pedicure to someone who has nail fungus – For the health of our clients, we are careful to ensure that we are
meeting and exceeding the state regulations for cleanliness in every way.  This helps to ensure a clean and safe environment for our clients, our technicians and our environment.
2.  One of the reasons that pedicures with nail fungus are against state regulations, is because nail fungus can be spread.   Ever think of where you might have picked up your nail fungus?  Well we have.  If you got a manicure or pedicure at a facility that DOES provide nail services to someone who has a nail fungus, then the pedicure basins, implements, and surfaces can be
contaminated with the fungus.  Combine this with other risk factors (short nails, damaged nail beds, compromised immune system, nails staying in a dark place (like socks)) and you could quickly contract a nail fungus…that is tough to get rid of too.  This is a PRIME reason that we cannot and will not provide nail services when you have an active nail fungus.  To protect you and all of our other clients (and technicians too!).
3.  Another reason we do not provide nail services to our clients  when they have a nail fungus – Stirring up the fungus can make it infect your other nails as well!
Don’t take our word for it, look at what the Mayo Clinic has to say about Prevention of Nail Fungus
4. While nail polishes WILL NOT harbor fungus, yes we will say it again…Nail Polishes will NOT harbor nail fungus, because the chemicals in the nail polish create an INHOSPITABLE environment for fungus, applying polish to your nails that are infected with fungus will actually make the fungus MORE DIFFICULT to
get rid of.  The polishes (and or enhancements) will actually make it more difficult for your nail to breathe, keeping more moisture in the nail, and causing the fungus to grow! We get it though, we know you want to cover up the fungus, and we understand why.  But the problem is, that we will not compromise your health, the health of our other clients or the health of our technicians, to do something that will actually make the problem worse – or spread it further.
Our dedication to cleanliness and health makes Essential Salon and Spa in Clarks Summit PA, the best choice for your next manicure or pedicure .

PLEASE – Next time you call for an appointment or stop in somewhere to get a manicure or pedicure, ask them if you can still get the service if you have a nail fungus….THEN RUN if they say you can.

**SKIN TIPS FROM ESSENTIAL **
Do You Use Chemical-Based Skin Care Products?

Unlike natural skin care products, these products are made up of different kinds of chemicals and synthetic ingredients. In spite of the fact that some chemicals make them effective, they increase the probability of developing into skin allergies, irritations and side effects. These chemicals, especially, are way too abrasive to individuals with sensitive skin.
As a result, more harm is often done than good. Also, you are at risk of premature aging if you use chemicals continuously. Toxic ingredients, that are not found in natural skin care products, are prominent in these chemicals, which overtime exhaust your skin and make it sag because it loses its natural reproductive elements.

In fact, unnatural products can actually cause acne. Many of the chemical products used in unnatural skin care lines can cause impurities. Common ingredients like mineral oil can attract free radicals and result in blemishes, and early aging.
Considering natural skin care products?  Natural skin care products are made from non-artificial ingredients like natural oils, plants (like seaweed, green tea), fruit extracts and fruit acids. These products are known to effectively treat the skin and nourish it. Most natural products have powerful antioxidants that assist in slowing down the aging process and creating a younger looking skin.
Skin care derived directly from nature is one of the best ways to get and keep your skin healthy and vibrant. Unfortunately, when choosing a product, you must keep in mind that not all natural skin care products are created equal. In fact, if you wip up some food items from your home for a facial you could cause a break out or even burn your skin.  Natural product over the counter formulations can vary wildly from brand to brand at each store and many are still made with silicones that are simply not skin-friendly. The reason many brands are made with silicone is because, as an ingredient, it is much cheaper and it makes a lotion or cream feel more luxurious once you apply it. While silicone feels nice on your body it adds no real value.

Does the product have to be 100% natural or organic? As long as it is 95% natural, it is a safe bet, but you have to look at the ingredients and make sure that they are of high quality. Even if you were to receive an organic label from the USDA, your skin care product must contain at least 95 percent organically produced ingredients. A product with more than 95% in natural ingredients is even better. When it comes to preservatives (the ones that kill bacteria, fungus and molds), make sure that the product does not use or contain parabens or that they are in the end of the ingredient list on the label .  This will insure there are only trace amounts included in the product.
